Consultation

Staff from the Center for Collaborative Problem Solving provide intensive consultation to general and special education schools, inpatient psychiatry units, and residential and juvenile justice facilities.

School staff frequently struggle to meet the needs of students with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Research has shown that traditional discipline procedures - detention, suspension, expulsion, and so forth -- fail to adequately address the needs of the students to whom such procedures are most frequently applied and aren't needed by the remainder of the student body. The CPS model provides educators and school personnel with state-of-the-art tools for assessing and remediating the difficulties of challenging students while simultaneously meeting the needs of their classmates.

Staff in inpatient units and residential and juvenile corrections facilities are also challenged to assess and meet the significant needs of the youth placed in these settings while maintaining safety and security. Many such facilities also struggle with high rates of chemical, physical, and mechanical restraint and locked-door seclusion. Our research indicates that these procedures actually make these settings less safe, not more safe. CPS provides staff in these facilities with a model for assessment, intervention, and staff communication to ensure high-quality care, reduce rates of recidivism, and ensure safety.

“The formulation of the problem is often more essential than the solution.”
